City of KCMO named in top 12 healthiest workplaces

HealthyNEW_477656324-300Being an employee of the City of Kansas City, Mo., is actually good for your health. The City of KCMO has earned a spot among the 12 healthiest workplaces in the city, as determined by Healthy KC.

A total of 47 area companies, nonprofits and government entities have been named “Certified Healthy KC Companies”—a designation recognizing their efforts in creating a workplace focused on health and wellness. Healthy KC is an initiative of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC).

Certification is based on four “pillars” of health including nutrition, physical activity, tobacco cessation and work/life integration.

Kelly Murphy, KCP&L, chair of Healthy KC’s Workplace Wellness Action Team, says, “It is the goal of the team to drive engagement in workplace wellness and, more broadly, improve the health and well-being of area residents. The Healthy KC certification program has been designed to be accessible by organizations of all sizes. By shining a spotlight on workplace wellness, we hope to make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of those participating in the programs.”

“The perception is that it’s only the larger companies that invest in employee health and wellness programs,” says Jim Heeter, president and CEO of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. “What I find exciting is the number of smaller organizations that have achieved certification as a Healthy KC organization. It shows that any business—no matter the size—can create a healthy workplace.”

“Blue KC is excited to see so many Kansas City companies engaged and committed to the health and wellness of their employees,” says Erin Schneider Stucky, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Blue KC. “Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to be a certified Healthy KC organization. Our community is a healthier and happier place because of your dedication and commitment.”

There are four levels of certification, based on a company’s level of achievement across the four pillars. Joining KCMO in recognition are:
